Todd's 5th grade teacher is a close family friend and neighbor. I've known all summer because she told me he was in her class. I am excited, yet nervous at the same time. I hope since she personally knows my son and has already spent lots of time with him that it will be beneficial, yet I don't want him to be shown any favoritism. But on the other hand, what if there's issues? I would hate for it to add any stress to our friendship. Not only is she his teacher, she is also the leader for our daughters' girl scout troop. This is a weird prediciment to be in. Don't know exactly how I feel. Thoughts?

Just handle any possible issues direct and with respect for each other - since your friends, that should make it easier to communicate already.
I think it will work out fine.
But this time of year always makes me nervous too :eek

i think it will work out fine. i must say that i was surprised when i read your post all the way through, though. i thought you were going to have issues with the opposite--not with being concerned about favoritism, but about your son wanting favoritism since he already knows her and not getting it because she isn't like that. just goes to show the colored lens i see through. (i was in that situation once, and i had the issue i thought you were talking about. it worked out with a couple of weeks, btw, and we had a great year. i'm sure todd will too.)

My mom's best friend was my 2nd grade teacher and my brother's 2nd grade teacher and her son was my brother best friend through college. We grew up in a small town so everyone knew everybody. I think we live in a day were that's so rare, that the thought of being friends seems strange, but really it's totally fine. I wouldn't worry too much.
