potty training boys

I'm talking to a friend right now that got belittled for potty training her son by having him *sit* on the potty. They said that he will be made fun of when he's grown.....so how do you do it? Standing up or sitting down?

Sitting down!! They'll learn to do it standing up soon enough... she should not worry about it at all. Sitting down at least will save her some clean up work for a little while!

That's what I said! These ladies she works with are a little on the crazy side anyway. Not that I see a problem with them standing up, but she's not going to do psychological harm to him if she teaches him sitting down. Just my opinion!

I am teaching Gunnar by sitting as well. I can't exactly show him how to do it standing. That will have to come with time.

when they are that small, it is so much easier to sit down. My youngest is not...umm long enough, to stand without making a huge mess on the floor.

Leo does both now, but we taught him initially sitting down.

We started with sitting and then moved to standing.

We started with sitting here too and then went to standing.

i wonder how they taught their boys to poop standing up :giggle
We taught sitting down. Some days he feels like standing, most he doesn't. Oh well.
And I can't imagine that a whole lot of his buddies will be watching him on the toilet when he's older, to be ABLE to make fun of him.

My little guy still sits and he's been potty trained for a while. Not only that he sits backwards (from the way you and I do). He's so short he can't stand and do his business. We have a step stool at home but in public he's gotta sit. I'm sure once he gets taller and starts school he'll want to be like his buddies and stand. I'm not worried about it.

We taught P to sit, but he prefers to stand. I'm not really sure where he learned that since he has 2 mommies :lol. At his school, they encourage the boys to sit.

Thanks so much for bring this up! I've been asking other moms the same question and I believe they think I'm nuts! All of them said "standing" like it was obvious. My son, who's almost 2, went to the potty by himself and made a mess everywhere! I just don't want that to happen again, or at least not as often.

i'm sure when he is 12 he will understand the difference between SITTING and STANDING and be able to make decision himself.

That's kind of what I told her. If he gets made fun of once, he'll decide whether he wants to change his ways. And while we are teaching Phoenix to sit, I caught him standing once. So, it's not like he doesn't know that's an option. I'm sure most boys are the same. (Two mommies or not :lol).

We taught Nathan (and are teaching Elijah) by sitting backwards. Nathan eventually went to sitting normally and eventually started standing (like Daddy). I don't think there's anything to worry about. They'll WANT to stand soon enough. :)

From my experience with autistic kids its much better to teach them sitting first becuase it makes teaching them to poop much easier. Standing is easy to teach later once they get the hang of everything.

Well I tried teaching him by sitting down from 2.5-on. After his 3rd b-day I gave up. He loved to pee in the backyard so I just let him. At about 3yrs 3mths or so he PTed himself. He stands up to pee and sits to poop. I would say I PTed him but really I had nothing to do with it. He did it when he decided to do it

We taught Connor with him sitting. He has done it a few times standing, but there's so much effort involved to keep him from tumbling into the toilet that he can't relax enough to let things flow. I figure once he's taller, he'll be able to handle it better.

(A disturbing little sidenote: I once dated a guy who at 37 years old still sat to pee. It was a little troubling for me.)

Colton started seated which is safer/cleaner IMO - his aim wasn't good to begin with and he didn't always know when #2 was coming. ;)

He'll stand most of the time now, unless we go somewhere that has really high toilets or if he's half-asleep.

I really don't know what the big deal is - why should a man HAVE to stand just because he has the ability to do so? :scratch

We started Ethan with sitting at that time he wasn't even tall enough to get it in the toilet. Now he goes whichever way he feels like.

I don't understand why a boy would be made fun of for peeing sitting down?

Societal norms, I would figure.

sitting down. i do not want to deal with pee everywhere! but... then dh started getting him to go standing so he wouldn't be a wussy so now theres pee everywhere anyway. i say let them go sitting down until THEY are interested in doing it standing.

We'll teach sitting here, too. Why stand? it just gets pee all over the floor...gross!

I taught Ezra to pee while sitting. Of course, he saw his daddy peeing, and decided he wanted to stand. I let him, but I used to have to help with his aim. Now he does a great job at aiming, and can stand with most potties. The only ones he has to sit on now are when we go into a handicapped restroom, where the toilets are taller. (Which is most of the time, if they don't have a family bathroom. Sorry, but I have a hard time fitting all three of us in an itty bitty stall.)

I don't see a problem with it. I don't plan on having anyone watching my boy pee anyway.

they will make fun of him if he hasn't learned how to stand and pee when he's 16 but not as a little guy.

We taught Seth to sit. Once he learned when he needed to #1 or #2 he started standing.

sitting down. I am not worried abou the standing up part. I am sure he will figure that out later.

I grew up with three brothers who all learned to stand. It was always frustrating when I was given the chore of cleaning the potties. DH was taught to sit, along with his three brothers. MIL made it a rule, which was probably smart as she had 4 boys. I guess he'll teach DS to sit too!

I taught Mason to sit. He only started standing to pee in the past year or so (and he just turned 7). It can SUPER messy sometimes when they stand...especially if they are not tall enough. I was not going to have any wee on my floors, so sitting was good with me till he was tall enough.
