Jackie 04-21-2008 Monday, 08:44 AM Sorry if this is in the wrong area. Still gettin the hang of the forum changes :lol
So, I don't know if this is normal b/c B never did this.
Lily favors her right side a LOT. Like, if you are holding her, she looks to her right only. IF she is laying down, her head is always turned to her right. Right now she's in her walker thing and she's facing right. She's CONSTANTLY staring in that direction.
Is that normal? Does it have something to do with the muscle development in her neck?
What can i do to get her to look left more?
TeriMomOf4 04-21-2008 Monday, 08:49 AM Can you turn her neck to the other side or does she EVER turn it to the other side?
The name for that is Torticollis. You can google it to find exercises/stretches to do with her.
Make sure she gets LOTS of tummy time to help strengthen her neck.
You will also want to keep a watch on her head shape...laying on one side can cause plagiocephaly.

Jackie 04-21-2008 Monday, 09:05 AM she CAN turn it, and if I hold her head and slowly try to get her to turn her head to the left, she will, but as soon as i let go. SNAP, right back to the right.
As far as sleeping, she sleeps facing up, b/c she's in a danny sling with a headsupport and is swaddled, so she's very rarely turned COMPLETELY to the right when she sleeps. She's normally either flat o0n the back of her head, or cocked ever so slightly to the right or left (Depending on which was her head falls while sleeping since she's on a 60degree incline)
Jackie 04-21-2008 Monday, 09:07 AM i should also mention that while she prefers the riht over the left, she DOES also look straight forward. And when she DOES turn her head to the left (which is rare) is doesn't appear to hurt her.
Heather 04-21-2008 Monday, 09:26 AM Raemi didn't necessarily always LOOK to one side, but from birth she always rolled herself onto her left side to sleep...so her side preference seems fairly normal to me. :dunno
Susan 04-21-2008 Monday, 09:29 AM Seth did this. As long as they CAN turn their head there is little to worry about. My ped suggested putting interesting things on the other side of him. Seems like he only wanted to look to his right. I would open up big art books on his left side an prop them up..he would stare at them and eventually everything evened out.
ilynnegrl 04-21-2008 Monday, 09:38 AM Quinn does this, too, and also to the right. I'm a little worried that her head is getting flat on that side (but Kim thinks I'm nuts). Like others have said, just keep trying to put interesting things on the left, craddle her in your right arm, so she has to look left to see you, tummy time, etc.
Jackie 04-21-2008 Monday, 09:39 AM see, i've been doin that... which is ACTUALLY how i figured out she was favoring that side. Yesterday my mom was holding her and she was kind of sitting on the edge of the dining room table. I was standing to her riht in a patterned shirt and she was just staring at it. I moved behind my mom and she tracked me up until she would have had to face more left than straight to look at me, and then turned back to the right. So I held my shirt out in front of her face where the pattern was that she was staring at, and did the same thing, slowly moving it to the left.. and the same thing happened.
And I just tried to do an extra period of tummy time for the day (we normally do it in the afternoon so i dont forget) and it's not working :lol She knows how to roll now so i can't keep her on her tummy for more than like 3 seconds.
mothragirl 04-21-2008 Monday, 10:20 AM both of mine did this. i gently turned their head a lot and i take mabel to the chiropractor. now that mabel is trying to crawl and moving around she is putting her head both directions.
Amy02 04-21-2008 Monday, 10:31 AM I think you should talk to your pedi. at your next appointment. The dr. should be able to show you some exercises that can help. It sounds like you are being proactive with tummy time and trying to encourage her to turn left. Keep it up!
Does she seem to tilt her head at all? You would notice this when she is looking straight ahead, her chin should align with the middle of her chest.
Mara 04-21-2008 Monday, 10:44 AM Z did the same thing starting when she was born. She could turn her head in either direction, it just seemed that she prefered one direction. She did end up having torticollis, and we had some exercises we did at home to stretch the neck muscle on that side. She thought the exercises were funny, so there was never any pain involved... :)
I'd have the dr. check it out at the next appt. just for peace of mind... but you seem to be on top of things! :)
Crystal S 04-21-2008 Monday, 10:53 AM :yeah to Mara. Jack went to a PT a few times and we got some stretches/exercises to do at home. It worked itself out, but he was developing a flat spot on the right side of his head due to favoring his right side so much.
Carol 04-21-2008 Monday, 10:53 AM Nate did that for a little while too. I would just keep doing what you're doing. I noticed I would typically be on his right side while changing his diaper so I switched him around so I was on his left instead. If the walker starts out in the same direction, turn it around. I don't remember how long it was before he looked both ways but it all evened out. I would mention it at the next pedi appt if it isn't resolved before then.

Actually laying on her back could also cause it...Harper slept on her back & had mild plagiocephaly & torticolis on the right side. It all started when she wa born as well...Just took a little bit to figure things out. Harper did pt & we did the exercises at home that Mara mentioned. She also wore the DOC band for 9wks due to the mild plagiocephaly. Our pedi wasn't helpful at all in fact she blew me off. Talk w/your pedi see what he says:hug
JenniferM 04-21-2008 Monday, 11:14 AM Lena did that. I took her to a pedi chiro and after one adjustment she was perfect! Seriously, as soon as she finished she turned her head to the left. I was shocked! I had never had alot of faith in chiro, but it realy worked! She was only 3 weeks old when I took her.
Charmed_Valerie 04-21-2008 Monday, 11:37 AM M has a right side preference too but it mostly went away after he's started becoming semi-mobile (rolling) and now that he has better head control.
