I was talking to dh this morning. I'm thinking about letting the kids continue at the private school they are currently at until about 5th grade and then start homeschooling after then.
Do you know anyone who has done that?
Just curious. Thanks.

Actually, any combination of school/homeschool is doable. :upthumb
I definitely know people that have pulled kids out in late middle school and started then. You might have to go through a period of De-schooling before you can be a very effective homeschool teacher.

can you explain the de-schooling thing a little more. i have considered homeschooling for the last three years. ds will be in 7th grade next year. we have decided to homeschool this summer to get a feel for it and to see if it's something we really want to do....

I know someone that homeschooled her daughters only during 6th, 7th and 8th grade and it was wonderful for her. They only reason her daughter's went back to regular school for high school was because one wanted to be in the orchestra and the other in sports.
She has said that the middle school years are the best years to homeschool.

this is a great thread...I am also struggling to figure out the right thing to do for Ian...he is just having a hard time right now...not academically...but socially...he hates school, and is so sensitive to people picking on him...I just don't think that jr high (next year) will be any better...I am just at a loss at where to start..I know that the recreation center offers some art/pe classes...I am considering doing an online homeschooling with him (anyone have experience w Texas Tech?)...maybe I could do a trial run this summer to see if he is able to keep up with the work. He has never been real motivated..and well, is a bit of a slob...so I don't know if homeschooling will help or hurt...gah..so many things to think of!

I started with my son at the end of 5th grade. He did go back to school, not because he wanted to at all..but because I was very very stupid. You see, he had gotten in to the gifted program just before we left and I sent him back for the GT program. Our middle schools are definitely way better than our elementary schools, but I see a huge difference between him and his sister who started homeschooling after 2nd grade and still is homeschooling.
