Karri 12-13-2007 Thursday, 09:58 PM What items are you more likely to re-use for other purposes in your home? Bags? Bottles (glass or plastic?), etc.?
What items are you more likely to recycle. Or, do you recycle? :lol
I find myself reusing glass containers for many things but I rarely think to reuse plastic. Bags always get a second life. Plastic is what I mainly recycle.
7isSufficient 12-13-2007 Thursday, 10:02 PM I save my coffee cans (for the arts and craft cabinet)..I save some tin cans (also for the a&c cabinet)...jars for bug catching...I recycle all bags (although I do re-use some for diapers and cleaning dog poo from the backyard and walking the dogs)...I recycle pretty much everything that I can that I don't re-use..lol, I feel guilty if I don't :)
evysmama 12-13-2007 Thursday, 10:40 PM I save a few glass jars to drain grease into. All other glass, plastic and aluminum goes into the recycle bin. We try to recycle whatever the city will take. DH will often bring home drink bottles that we've bought while out so we can recycle them rather than toss them into a trash bin.
I recycle plastic bags too, but like Amy, use some for diapers and dog duty.
BostonMa 12-14-2007 Friday, 05:38 AM I do a lot of recycling, but I use jars for crafts, storage of craft items, etc. I used big plastic containers (like for margarine) to hold crayons, pencils and homemade play-doh or clay. I also recycle plastic bags, but definitely have to use some for the dog & diapers.
Egg cartons are good for crafts. We either use them in the project or we use them to put paint in.
Cindy 12-14-2007 Friday, 06:36 AM I am a big recycler since I live in Dallas and it's free with my trash(don't even have to sort!!!! :D). We reuse a lot of things, including bags for diapers and various other kid related crap. I don't reuse much plastic since it'll break down and leach.
Me too. I've stopped buying cases of bottled water because of having all of those plastic bottles around. Everyone in my house is getting (or has gotten) an aluminum bottle for water.
Cindy 12-14-2007 Friday, 06:37 AM Local shelters/food banks go through something crazy like 3,000+ shopping bags a day, so we try to save up the old bags and take them to the shelter to use. I've never been a fan of throwing bags away. If I don't use them for something, they just stack up. DH has called me "the bag lady" before. I guess I am. I'm the same way with plastic packing materials, like bubble wrap. I just keep that stuff around until I can find a use for it.
WW2004 12-14-2007 Friday, 06:39 AM I've always recycled.--My mom recycled back in the 1980's when no one else did. We had a huge set-up in the garage to separate colored glass, the different kinds of plastic, etc. Now, it is so easy to throw everything in the big blue tub!
I should work on re-using things, though. With the exception of bags, I rarely do.
artzy_fartzy68 12-17-2007 Monday, 03:14 PM We don't have a recycling program here. :(
We take our aluminum to the aluminum plant, but the other stuff is problematic.
I spend a lot of time figuring out how to use it, cuz I know NOT to throw it in the landfill, but I don't know what the heck to do with it.
I save plastic contains for "Tupperware" and I save glass jars, but I have no idea why.
:)
so I guess I don't recycle much, and I am at a loss at the reusing.
I'm good at re-purposing fabric/clothing, though!
Mel_C 12-17-2007 Monday, 06:24 PM We also have city recycling, but we do have to sort between trash and recycle, we have 2 bins for the curb. I keep some glass jars for future use.. crafts, bugs, etc... I keep cool whip tubs for grease catchers... also coffee cans for future use... I recycle some of the plastic tubs from yogurt and cottage cheese as you can only need so many of those containers and Ally goes through plenty of yogurt. ;) I only get grocery bags when husband is running out of ones to take lunch in and use reusable bags the rest of the time.... I donate or make diapers out of old clothes... umm... I think that's it.
sportsmom 12-17-2007 Monday, 09:52 PM We had recycling growing up in Michigan, so I was glad to finally see it come along when I lived in Dallas. I wish Sachse would get a recycle cart since we fill our little bin up every week and use a second one we got when no one claimed theirs that floated down the street one day.
We recycle everything possible (junk mail, weekly ads, flyers, paper and those crazy phone books too) and don't even fill a kitchen size garbage bag each week for the trash can. It drives me nuts that our neighbor will put out 2 overflowing garbage cans but NOT a recycle bin. I wonder how they get that much trash! If we have people over and they throw their cans and glass bottles in the trash, I do fetch them out and take them to the recycle bin.
I take all the plastic bags to Albertsons' drop box. Toilet paper and paper towel rolls, along with cardboard egg containers go to my dd's pre-school to use for projects.
