I was just mowing the back yard and ran over a bunny nest. There was already a dead/mostly eaten bunny to the side of it and one live one and whatever was left was maggot covered. This is a TINY bunny. What do we do with it? We burned the nest (to get rid of the maggots) and it's obvious this little guy is on his own. Animal control basically laughed at us when we called for them to come get him. So now what?? We put the baby in a box with lots of grass and some carrotts, but I'm sure it is still drinking from mommy since it's so tiny!

Poor bunny!! I don't know what to do with him. (and yes, I am assuming the gender as a boy)

Awwww!!!! Call a pet store and see what they have to say, and call a vet. They might have recommendations.

We had the same thing happen when I was a kid and we fed it formula with an eye dropper and it did pretty well. :)

Maybe you can google and find some info...?

Do they make bunny formula? I've seen it for dogs and cats!

I found an injured bunny in our front yard and called Plano Animal Control - they were here w/in an hour. That is too bad that yours laughed.

I only know Plano resources - I know a friend that gave a baby bunny to the Outdoor Learning Center here in Plano.

This happened to us in Amarillo and I called every agency I knew and finally a Wildlife refuge was going to try and get us in contact with someone locally who might be willing to take the bunnies in. We had at least one injured one and several others we had stirred up. It was recommended that we leave them near the nest in hopes that mommy bunny would come back. And over the course of two days the mommy bunny moved all of her little ones to another nest. By the time someone called to take them off our hands they had already relocated. Apparently bunnies are pretty smart. Don't know if any of this helps you though. I'd have a hard time leaving one lone baby bunny alone.

poor little guy-if the other one had maggots then it sounds like mommy isn't coming back :(

I found this site (http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/orphan.html) doing a quick google search-it talks about how to tell if the baby is dehydrated so you know where to start with him.

and this site (http://www.webbedworks.com/messingerwoods/babybunny.htm) has more details on how to care for the baby (including : Do NOT feed the bunnies anything including any kind of milk, water, honey, eggs or homemade formula because their stomachs will not tolerate it. )

good luck!:fingcross

Thanks all. After about a dozen phone calls, we talked to a lady in stephensville. We told her we researched what we could, made a new nest within 5 feet of the old one and told her that when we checked on the baby he was just covered in flies and was crawling out of the new nest out into the open. She recommended we bring the bunny inside in a box with lots of grass for warmth, use an eyedropper and feed it pedialyte tonight to hydrate it, then in the morning feed it animal formula (which we got at petco). So dh got a little box, some hay, pedialyte, and baby animal formula and is nurturing it until hopefully someone calls us back tomorrow or monday. There is some lady in Little Elm that is a wildlife perservist and specializes in baby bunnies so we emailed her, left her a voice message and a volunteer at some wildlife preservist line left her a message. We have the baby in the garage since that is the warmest place and we will keep our fingers crossed tonight and hope for the best. :fingcross Dh gave the baby a sponge bath also because it had a ton of weird white clumpy residue on it (thinking maybe fly/maggot eggs since the others were devoured). He's so funny when it comes to injured animals. It's soooooo cute though and soooo tiny...can't be more than a few days old because it's still crawling around and barely has his little eyes open.

Well dh went to check on Harvey (we named him before bed) early this morning. He was no longer alive. :( Somehow fly "larvea" must have gotten inside him and hatched and had to eat. So gross and so so sad for the bunny. :( :( :( And the wildlife lady called us back this morning ready to come get him. :(

That is sad, but it sound like you did everything in your power to do. I hoep your kids take it okay, that was always hard when something we rescued died :( You gave it a better last day then his siblings, maybe you can have comfort knowing that, hugs :hug

Oh, that's sad. But that's also how nature works. You did what you could. :hug

We had this happen in our yard 2 weeks ago. Our dog found one :( , one seemed to die from maybe lack of nourishment and the last one hopped away before we could try to re-locate it. It's so sad because where we live there isn't really any area for them to go. They are so vulnerable.
