Colors?

Does anyone know at around what age kids are suppposed to start knowing their colors? I'm really paranoid about this because my dad is colorblind and it's hereditary, especially with boys. I know Tristan doesn't have it, but Jackson will be three in August and he says all colors are green. I made him some flash cards yesterday with just the primary colors to work with him and see if he just needs to learn what the colors are, but I'm wondering if it's too soon.

I try and teach them things by their age groups so they'll be ready for school and pre-k helps a lot.

Here's what I have:

Age 2-colors, basic animals and sounds, basic body parts
Age 3-shapes, counting to ten, knowing their name
Age 4-ABC's, numbers 1-20, their full name, phone #

Can anyone think of anything I'm missing?

I remember Ian saying Green for everything (it's the first color he noticed and is still his FAVORITE)......I thought the same thing - colorblindness runs in my fam too. It seemed that he clicked with the color idea about five months ago and so he was around 30 months old.

The flash cards are a great idea, puzzles, even when watching blues clues just ask "what color is that clue?". When making his snack "what color is your cup?" and relate to him with colors too....."I can't find your blue toothbrush, oh, there is the blue toothbrush" "let's use the green plate today" etc.... When coloring talk about the shades of colors. He just hasn't thought of color before, but when he notices you are relating with color he may give it a try.

I'd give it a few months and if it's all still green then maybe see an opthomologist near his third birthday.......I'm not sure they can tell much before age three (but Teri may know more about that, with her past experience with eye drs. ).

He would have to be pretty cooperative for an eye doctor to tell that. I have never known a child under 3 to be identified as being color blind.

I would try a few things before you get too worried....
1. Try matching colors....make a match for your flashcard and see if he can match the like colors together. Sometimes it is more of a language issue than a vision issue. He should be able to match black and white at 26-29 mos. Matching primary colors is 29-33 mos, so he may not be able to do it yet.
2. Does he overgeneralize other things? Like are all vehicles trucks? All animals dogs? He might still be overgeneralizing...although that should end soon.
Some other things you can work on would be fine motor/pre-writing skills.
2's should be able to hold a crayon with their thumb and fingers (not fisted), be able to imitate a circular scribble, fold paper (but not exact), string 3 one-inch beads, snip with scissors.
3's should be able to cut a line that has been drawn, fold a paper in half, imitate drawing a cross, copy a circle, hold a pencil with an adult grasp and string 1/2 inch beads.
