We left for Baylor University Hospital at 8:30am. I had been having strong BH contractions for the last week and thought I was going into labor a couple times, but all false alarms. I was scheduled for induction on 11/26 at 9:00.
They inserted cytotec at 9:00. I was 2 cm and 50% effaced. I started feeling more regular contractions by 10:00, but they were pretty mild and about 7 min apart. At 1:30pm Dr. Graham asked if we could break my water. We had discussed this as an option and I felt comfortable. The head was well engaged and I was having contractions. I was still about two cm dilated but about 80% effaced.
After my water was ruptured, things really started moving. I went for a 30 min walk outside the hospital. By the time I got back my contractions had picked up and were 3-4 min apart. The bed was terribly uncomfortable and I had every intention of having another natural birth, so I stayed out of it. I sat on the birthing ball, stood and rocked and leaned on the bed through contractions. My husband was so wonderful and supportive. I did have two IV doses of penicillin as I tested GBS+, but other that that we kept the IV heplocked.
At 3:30 my wonderful Dr. came back. I am so impressed w/ her as she was really there for most of the labor and birth. She sat and told stories, fed me some ice chips and most importantly reinforced my desire for a natural childbirth. She and my nurse, Michelle, were instrumental in us having the birth we desired. I was 4 cm and 90% effaced. Dr Graham said weÂ’d have a baby by dinner, my guess was 5:58pm.
At about 5:00pm I started losing my composure, the contractions were on top of each other and so strong. I asked for drugs, but my husband, Dr, and nurse all encouraged me to try other things, as I was so close. I was 8 cm. I got on my hands and knees in the bed for while, and then asked for drugs again so my Dr recommended the bathtub. The tub was very helpful, but I could feel the head coming down and really wanted to push.
I got into the bed, I was 91/2 cm. Dr. Graham tried to hold the cervix back for a couple pushes, it just hurt too much. I breathed through a couple more contractions, then decide to just start pushing and have my baby. I pushed for less than 5 minutes and baby James Connor Tate was on my chest! 6:15pm-I missed it by 17 minutes.
I am so thankful to my support team, my husband Jim, Dr. Graham, and my nurse Michelle. We had planned a homebirth, but due to complications had to change our plans at 28 weeks. I chose a Dr who was supportive of my wishes and had a wonderful birth experience. I did not want drugs, but really needed support and encouragement at the end.
