max'smom 03-12-2004 Friday, 12:18 AM A while back I was searching for a new pediatrician... well thanks to everyone out there I believe I've found one.
Now I'd like to get your opinion on hospitals in the area. While I'd really like to stay close to home (Plano, Frisco, Carrollton, etc), I'm not opposed to traveling a little bit for something spectacular.
I'm looking for a hospital that's known especially for it's labor and delivery, ranking on neo-natal emergency (especially), and pediatrics.
What has been your experience with Trinity Medical Center, Plano Medical Center, Baylor and any others?
ambhi 03-12-2004 Friday, 07:19 AM Interesting you should ask that :) I just changed doctors to be able to deliver at the hospital of my choice, after touring the two hosiptals my other doctor is only allowed to deliver at. I am 31wks along even and decided to switch.. You see, my first two kids I delivered at medical city dallas.. it was wonderful there!.. my third baby I had to deliver at RHD.. my problem with that hospital was the nurses--no support at ALL!.. and also a male nurse on staff sorta bothered me a "bit".. ;) not something I was prepared for and didnt want any male around me at that time. anyhow.... i had a choice this time between plano medical center (seemed nice btw but far) and richardson regional (this one was MUCH too small).. i didnt like the tour of richardson.. i am not sure what they renovated in the L&D but it looked as if they were putting people into jail cells in the postpartem rooms, and yes the delivery rooms were also QUITE small!.. dh's family always visits me in the hospital and there are about 20 of them that come.. we would be VERY tightly squeezed, and I would not feel comfortable with that, even though they would..
anyhow--medical city is my favorite.. i think if you do a hospital tour or check out the websites of the hospitals (med city has a virtual tour of their L&D) then it might give you a better idea.. my other issue with the richardson regional was the nurses as well... they didn't seem "up to par" to me.. ok--maybe I am just being a picky pregnant woman.. lol..
anyhow.. do a tour!.. :) that way you can get your own feel of things!!!!!

mistas 03-12-2004 Friday, 07:38 AM I delivered Michael at Pres. of Dallas wont do that again. When I delivered him I had to have a emergency C- section b/c of the stupid nurse giving me too much inducement. Also when i went in for my c- section they had a intern doing it with a the dr right there but it was the 1st delivery for him and he looked like he was 15 yrs old. Also the nurses there were slow it took 4 hours to get my pain meds since they kept telling me they forgot. I was just no happy there.
When i delievered Jacob I had him at Baylor of Garland. I loved that place. Its a small hospital but the nurses really care and they were always answering questions. I was a total B++ch to them when i finally woke up the night but they were still nice and explanined why I couldnt see my son since i was still under so much medication I couldn't move yet.. Also you get your own private room no matter what. they dont have 2 bed rooms there it was nice. My dr was great I couldnt of asked for a better Dr. He was the best one I have ever seen and I will keep going back to him for any female problems I have in the furture. His name is Dr Cowart and I am so glad I found him..
Monette 03-12-2004 Friday, 07:47 AM Logan and Megan were also born at Baylor of Garland (our kids were there at the same time! ha). I don't know if that's too far for you or not. But I agree with what Mindy said. They were AWESOME!!!!!!! We still go visit :) Their NICU is a level 3.
My OB/GYN was/is Dr. McNabb who's office is right across from the hospital. Great Dr!
JulsMom 03-12-2004 Friday, 09:04 AM I second what Nicole said. Juls was born at Presby Dalas. I will have all of my children there. They are ranked best for SO MANY catagories. Granted I did not have a PERFECT experinece (but NO hospital will give you that), but all of the great out weighed the little bad. I would not go anywere else.
max'smom 03-12-2004 Friday, 10:04 AM thanks, I am also looking for a new OBGYN and Gen. Practice Dr. I hate moving from a new state and having to start all over with this kind of stuff.
Please keep the info coming, I'm gathering as much as I can.
Melissa 03-12-2004 Friday, 11:08 AM I delivered Brittany in Plano Presby and I had a GREAT experience. I loved all my nurses and of course I just love my OB/GYN. He is such a caring man with a great bedside manner. Brittany was able to sleep in the room with us which we liked to kinda get prepared for being alone with her at home. I didn't have to wait or want for anything. I will be delivering #2 at Plano Presby as well. My sister delivered her kids there and my sister-in-law delivered one of her kids there. The thing I LOVE about my doctor too is if you have to have a c-section, he performs it - period. Their rooms are big too.
I know my sister and I were born in Baylor downtown and they are supposed to have a great maternity ward.
Mghmom 03-12-2004 Friday, 11:09 AM My daughter was born at Medical Center of Plano and I loved everything about it. We had a GREAT experience and ALL of the staff were so wonderful!!!!

Elaine 03-12-2004 Friday, 11:42 AM I agree with everyone who had great experiences at Dallas Presby. This was my first baby and the labor and delivery went incredibly smooth. All the nurses were wonderful and I felt like they went out of their way to accommodate me and make me comfortable.
seebee 03-12-2004 Friday, 12:19 PM I also delivered at Baylor Garland and had a pretty good experience. Most of the nurses were great (and one was SUPER great!), they have a lactation consultant on staff, and allow rooming in. And private rooms, as mentioned earlier.
Coletteh 03-12-2004 Friday, 01:21 PM I had Caleb at Baylor downtown. They were great. I was really glad to be there because he ended up having breathing problems and had to be in the NICU. Once he was released from the NICU (16 hours after birth) they let him stay in my room. He still had to have antibiotics, so they would take him to the nursery for that and bring him right back. I kept him in the bed with me, even when I was sleeping, and the nurses didn't seem to care. They never said anything, anyway. All of the nurses in LDR were great, very accomodating. The nurses in recovery were nice. They were pretty busy so they didn't spend too much time in the room unless I needed them (I preferred this). If you do go there, I don't recommend their Lactation Consultants. There is a great LC on this site you can use if you get home and need more help. Her name is Denny Rice. As for doctors, I use Dr. Lauren Monti. She is awesome! I have been going to her for 7 years and think she is the greatest. She is the doctor that most of the nurses in the maternity ward use. I live in Plano and never thought twice about making the drive to go to her, that's how fab I think she is.
You should know that I did use drugs and am typically pretty easy going. I don't know what it is like to give birth there if you don't want drugs and are very set in how you want things to go.
Good luck!
Carol 03-12-2004 Friday, 04:06 PM I delivered both boys at Medical Center of Plano and had a great experience with both. They've actually changed a couple of things since 2 years ago when I had Teddy. All of their rooms are now private and they will allow rooming in if that's important to you--you just need to sign a waiver I believe.
Cori 03-12-2004 Friday, 05:48 PM Downtown Baylor would be my personal pick. Very supportive of natural labor and great lactation consultants on staff.
Non-labor related.... Children's hospital is great if your child ever needs anything - testing, treatment, whatever. If I had an ABSOLUTE emergency, I'd go to the nearest hospital, obviously. If Julian or River needed hospital help, but not a dire emergency, I'd make the drive to Children's.
momtotwo 03-13-2004 Saturday, 10:28 PM I delivered both of mine at Medical Center of Plano and had wonderful experiences! My OB/GYN is located within the hospital so the first time I was able to walk right from her office to a delivery room. The nurses were so awesome and respected my wishes on what type of delivery I desired. With Taya, the nurse perfomed a perineal massage through delivery which helped prevent any tearing or need for an episiotomy. She kept the lights dim and kept visitors at bay, all per my request. They were great! Best wishes in your search!
Julia 03-14-2004 Sunday, 09:45 AM Lauren was delivered at St. Paul - not happy there.
Ian was delivered at Baylor downtown, I was very happy with them and yes, they are supportive of your wishes.
:)
Maggie_K 03-14-2004 Sunday, 12:05 PM Downtown Baylor L&D nurses are used to working with doctors and midwives who have patients who want a drug free delivery. They are VERY supportive of breastfeeding and have lots of places to pump if you need to do so for any reason. They have the highest level NICU facilities and a great group of Neonatologist on staff. I delivered there and my second daughter spent some time in the NICU.
Baylor Garland is good, too. I work there on the Ob/Gyn unit. They have a level III NICU, and anything more serious goes downtown. Most of the staff are trained to be lactation educators and they have Certified Lactation Specialist, too. They have "THE PUMP STATION" in the Women's Center....a store that rents and sells breast pumps, nursing bras, and things dealing with breast feeding.
After you deliver, you are welcome to return for weight and color checks to reassure you of successful breastfeeding and no jaundice.
The doctors are great, however, there are no midwives who deliver at Baylor Garland.
I, too, from a nurses perspective, like both Dr. Cowart and Dr. McNabb as mentioned in previous post.
Hope this helps.:)
texasamy 03-14-2004 Sunday, 08:39 PM Hi Shanna,
Sorry we haven't gotten back together. My life is so hectic right now:( how are you? Are you trying?
I loved Baylor downtown! The nurses there were so supportive of my wishes for natural and low intervention birth.
I also love Dr. Audrey Graham. She was so great, she fed me ice chips:)
Briannasmommy 03-15-2004 Monday, 12:21 AM I had my daughter at Medical Center of Plano and LOVED it. I received immidiate care as soon as I asked for it. I asked for the epi and received it within few minutes. Their rooms are awesome and they let you have people over the night with you. A plus for me.

ms_krista 04-05-2004 Monday, 04:44 PM I LOVE Presby Dallas. That's where my son was born in December and I was also born there in 1977! My obgyn was great and I actually had him (Dr Griffith) AND another one from their office with me. It was a great experience and the nurses were super wonderful. I too loved the rooming in.
