Passion of the Christmistas 03-01-2004 Monday, 06:54 AM Has anyone seen this yet? I am thinking of seeing it. I have heard good and bad things about it.. I want to see it just too see what all the hype is about but then I dont. Billie 03-01-2004 Monday, 07:44 AM I won't be seeing it. Cori 03-01-2004 Monday, 09:50 AM We saw this last night. I thought it was a good. I don't want to give anything away, but I would have to say it's not for kids - although there were TONS of parents with children there ranging from infants all the way up. Lots of elementary-aged kids (I'd not take Jeffrey to see this film until he was QUITE a bit older). It was harsh. I wouldn't say it was violent for violent's-sake - just a harsh look at what happened. To me, it was more of a documentary of the last hours of this man's life, and not a pushy "let's convert everyone to Christianity" movie that I thought it was going to be. I will warn you, several people sitting around us tried "preaching" to others around them before the movie began. I personally don't care to have strangers come up to me (who don't know my beliefs or backround) and begin telling me what I need to believe or do before I die.... That was my one complaint. Just out of curiousity, Billie, why won't you be seeing it? CathyAnn31 03-01-2004 Monday, 10:38 AM I won't be seeing it, either. Dorothy 03-01-2004 Monday, 10:46 AM I will be seeing it hopefully really soon!!!!!!! Eli and I will probaly tag team see it! Geree 03-01-2004 Monday, 11:14 AM I tried to go and see this movie on Saturday night. Everything was sold out at several diffrent places until like 10:30 or later. I just didn't want to be out that late. I was afraid I wouldn't get up for church. I will not be taking my children to see this movie. My son has just recently accepted Jesus as his savior and I just don't think he totally understands everything just yet. I think it is hard for adults to watch something like this also. This is my thoughts and in no way trying to push them onto anyone else. I have heard that it was harsh just like Cori has said. I have a personal relationship with God and it is going to be hard to see some of the things that he went through. I think seeing it just does something diffrent then when you read it. I think if it was my mother or father I would have the same feelings as I feel I am going to have when I go and see it. I know I have gotten on a soap box. Thanks for listening. Melissa 03-01-2004 Monday, 11:39 AM I definitely plan on seeing it but may also wait until it is out on DVD. My sister and Mom saw it and they said that Christians should definitely see it but they weren't sure how they felt about it. Rachel 03-01-2004 Monday, 03:03 PM I don't think I will see it in the the theater but will most likely see it when it comes out on video. I think it would be too much for me on the big screen. I have grown up my whole life in the church hearing of the death and resurection of Christ so sometimes I think I take it for grated as it is so familiar to me. I know it will be good to understand the agony that his sacrifice was. Billie 03-01-2004 Monday, 03:39 PM I won't be seeing it as a matter of conscience mainly. Everyone has differing views on this, but I believe that the 2nd commandment pertains also to images of Christ. Although I am not the one producing the image, I still feel like it will be wrong to support it. I am not happy with the way it is being marketed to churches and others as "the best evangelical tool in 2000 yrs". I think the Bible should hold that honor and not a movie that does very little to show the most important part of the gospel message, Christ's ressurection. The flogging scene is like 14 minutes long, but the ressurection pales in comparison. That is very dissapointing to me. Once again, these are just personal reasons. I am sure it may be a good experience for some. Coletteh 03-01-2004 Monday, 04:39 PM We will probably go see it in a couple of weeks. I think most of this past weekend's showings and this coming weekend's showings are bought out by churches. I know our church rented out 3 showings alone. Caleb is being baptized the 13th so that weekend is full with family. Maybe after that my aunt can babysit. I've heard some of the hardest scenes to watch are the ones with Mary, especially if you are a mom. I remember during Christmas this year I was in church and started thinking about the fact that Jesus was once a little baby like Caleb. How overwhelming to be Mary and know that little tiny baby was the Savior. After the movie came out I started to think about how horrible it would be to watch your child go through all Jesus did. I just held Caleb and cried. Now I'm crying again, so I'm going to stop writing. Monette 03-01-2004 Monday, 05:25 PM I won't be seeing it either. I'm content in my beliefs. :) Elaine 03-01-2004 Monday, 05:58 PM I am still undecided about whether or not I want to see it - I have just heard so many conflicting opinions about the movie. I agree with Monette, I am content with my beliefs but with all the hype I have to admit I am a little curiouis ... JulsMom 03-01-2004 Monday, 07:01 PM I will not be seeing this. momtotwo 03-01-2004 Monday, 09:20 PM We saw it on Saturday with two other couples. It is neat to see it with the company of people from different Christian beliefs and all find it so moving. I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it at first because I had reservations about how it would all be portrayed through the big screen, but I knew that I should in order to form my own opinion about it. I am glad that I did. It adds a new perspective visually than it does from reading alone (for me anyway). I think that the resurection is more important (jmo), so I'm hopeful that he will come out with a new movie focused more on that. Part II maybe, lol? momtotwo 03-01-2004 Monday, 09:20 PM yikes, why do I always double post? Sorry! Melissa 03-01-2004 Monday, 09:24 PM In the interviews with Mel Gibson, his entire focus of this movie is to show people the sacrifice that Jesus made for us in hopes to bring people closer to God. That is why he didn't show more of the resurrection even though everyone wants to see more of that and maybe he will but his purpose was clear in this movie and that is just the sacrifice. momtotwo 03-01-2004 Monday, 09:49 PM I agree Melissa, he has made it quite clear in his interviews that the sacrifice was the focus of this movie. I think he did a very wonderful job getting that point across. I'm glad that he made the movie as graphic as he did too. If he would have held back, it just wouldn't have been the same. Although Austin wants to see it we are going to have him wait a few years first though. Maggie_K 03-01-2004 Monday, 10:42 PM I have already been affected by the media coverage....reminded of things I learned as a child. I want to see the movie....need to experience that sense of God as a reality that I had as a teen. I don't know if any of you ever had those experiences in church in which you truly FELT God's presence. Now, if you truly believe and live as a Christian, you are treated as if you were silly and superstitious...I miss the old days. In adulthood I have lost a good bit of that certainty. I want to be reminded of the extent of His suffering, which He experienced for us because of our choices. . .perhaps it will help me...and others, to make better choices in our lives. I don't like it when people assume that the movie is just a money making venture or that Mel Gibson is just some crazy masochist(sp) with fanatical beliefs. I am glad to see the power of the movies used for something other than mindless, shallow fiction. I wouldn't take a preteen if I had one...but would encourage my children if they were teenagers. There are my two pennies worth. Take it or leave it. Just my thoughts Billie 03-02-2004 Tuesday, 05:39 PM The focus of the movie being the physical suffering is based on Gibson's Catholic beliefs (not wrong or anything and coming form his own words in a magazine interveiw). Catholics focus on the physical suffering and Protestants focus on the resurection. I don't believe the movie was a purely money making venture either. Gibson, infact, thought that he would lose money on this film, but decided to do it anyway. Good financial move Mel! ;) Even though I feel this movie should not have been made, it is so amazing to see the way God has taken it and made it such a great thing in so many people's lives anyway. Maggie_K 03-02-2004 Tuesday, 06:32 PM I have only been in Catholic churches a couple of times...for weddings, so the info was useful. Thanks. Chandra 03-02-2004 Tuesday, 11:58 PM I won't be seeing the movie. I am comfortable with my religous views as they are. jakesmommie 03-03-2004 Wednesday, 08:36 AM i probably wont be seeing it...ive seen other movies of the crucifiction and im like water works through those lol there is no way I could watch this movie and not be bawling the whole way through. And its rated R...dont think Jake would appriciate going to see it with us...and we dont have a sitter lol and I get really sick when I watch blood and gore things....but on the other hand Tom really wants to see it because he loves Mel gibson...so i dunno lol i doubt we will see it. momtotwo 03-03-2004 Wednesday, 08:43 AM Those of you who have or are planning on seeing it may find this info. helpful that a member shared on my board. http://www.pfm.org/BPtemplate.cfm?Section=BreakPoint_Home&template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=11696 |
