Prenatal Yoga

A couple of people have asked me about the prenatal yoga class I take, so I thought I'd post the details in one spot.

Prenatal Yoga with Cortney Phillips at the Allen Birthing Center
406 West Main Street, Allen, TX
Saturday mornings 9-10:30am
$48/month or $15 drop-in

For more info, call Cortney at 214-783-4275. Let her know I sent you!

You do need a doctor or midwife's approval before attending, and no previous yoga experience is necessary.

You don't need to be having your baby at the birthing center to attend - that's just where the class is held.

Cortney also is a RMT and is certified in Prenatal Massage - can you say HEAVEN?

Hey, Cori, I just asked a question related to this on the "prenatal water aerobics" thread that juliema started. I'll go ahead and ask it here, too:
What if I'm strapped for cash and can't start a prenatal yoga class for maybe another month. Is it okay to attend, in the first and early second trimester, a regular yoga class such as the ones offered at the (Plano) YMCA? I'm not physically burdened yet, so I don't think it's a matter of being able to attempt many poses so much as a possible risk regarding circulation. It seems like I've heard a precaustion somewhere before...but I think this is my only option, unless I do a stretching routine that focuses on relaxation after I do cardio...

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!
Steph

I just responded to the other post, but here's a copy/paste...

Make sure the instructor is certified to teach prenatal yoga. If they are, even if you're in a "normal" yoga class, they can give you variations on poses. Many yoga positions are contraindicated for pregnancy. Prenatal yoga instructors are well-versed in keeping the blood flowing (and getting lots of oxygen) to the baby.

Or, you can always get a prenatal yoga video. I have (and Steph - you are more than welcome to borrow it) Prenatal Yoga with Shiva Rea. It has different positions/modifications on poses for each of the 3 trimesters.

I took classes at the Birthing Center on Lovers Lane. There are two ladies that alternate from week to week. You are welcome to contact Elizabeth, yogamama@mindspring.com. Elizabeth teaches pre & post-natal yoga and yoga for women only. The other lady, Maitri, teaches pre & post-natal yoga. As you can see they are very centered around females and motherhood. I highly recommend them. I also know the instructor for "Prepared Childbirth Class" at Baylor recommendeds them.

Maitri is so nice! Is she back from maternity leave? I know she had her baby a few months ago. I ran into her at Christmas and she was taking a break from teaching.

Yes, Maitri is back. She is doing a post-natal class in Richardson along with the pre-natal at Lovers. I haven't been able to go since she is back, but I hope to in two weeks. Here is her e-mail if you want to find out more. maitri@anahat.org
