Anyone know about this religion? I grew up as Methodist and DH grew up as a Jehovah Witness so I figured if we tried something different to be fair to both of us. I would really like to start going to church (preferably by our house). So, I was driving the other day and saw a Presbyterian church but know nothing about it. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I grew up and was baptized Presbyterian and switched to Methodist when I was 12. Methodist and Presbyterian (in my OWN opinion) are very similar. The main differences being doctrines such as the affirmation of faith said by the Methodist. Also Methodists often have open communion and some Presbyterian's do not.

There are 2 Presbyterian denominations, the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) and the PCUSA (Presbyterian Church USA) The former is relatively new (~1970's) it is the more "conservative" of the two that split from the PCUSA. A great resource with links and all kinds of info is http://www.pcanet.org/.
What area of town are you located in? We have been to quite a few of the PCA churches in the area. They are all great. Each unique in its own way. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions. :)

edited to add:
there is also an OPC (Orthodox Presbyterian Church) branch of the Presbyterians. I am not familiar w/ it.

Hi Jennifer~
Sorry, I don't know anything about Canyon Creek Pres. There are not too many PCA churches on this side of town.
We are currently visiting too (after moving from Flower Mound)
We want to find something closer to home so that we can get involved.
We have been to Town North Presb in Richardson (Plano Rd & Campbell-east of 75) and are currently going to Trinity Presby in Plano (Hedgecoxe and Ohio). Both are PCA and similiar in their worship styles. Before the church in Flower Mound (Christ Pres-PCA) we were members of Park Cities Presby in Dallas (on Oak Lawn) It is one of the largest PCA churches in the area. It is a really great church and worth the drive if you don't mind big churches. We even drove there from Denton when we were first married. Parking can be a hassle w/ kids, but they have a shuttle bus which is nice. (pcpc.org)
There is also Metrocrest Pres in Carrollton, which may be a bit far for you.
Each church in the PCA has a similiar style in their form or worship service. The liturgy, hymns and prayers are very much the same. Some may also add a more contemporary song here and there, but overall, very traditional services. Some have communion once a month, every week. PCPC used to have it once a quarter b/c there are SO many people in each service (don't know what they do now)

I wish I knew about the church you are looking to visit. It is so hard to look for a church! We want to get involved and be sure we aer in the right place!

good luck and let me know if you need anything!!:)

We go to a PCA church in Rockwall and love it!

And everyone is right. There are many different types of Presbyterian, but PCUSA & PCA are the largest & 2nd largest, respectively. And PCUSA & PCA differ on some beliefs.

Presbyterian just means how the "government" of the church is organized rather than any doctrinal beliefs!

Good Luck on your search for a church you love!
