My mom passed away

My family needs prayers please. I just found out an hour ago.
Any advice on how to explain it to Drew would help me. I am so lost right now. But I need to let him know in the morning before we go to their house.

I am so sorry. There is a book at Family Christian Stores for children about losing a loved one. I can't remember the name of it, but it is worded well for children.

I am also sorry to hear about your loss. You and your family are in our prayers. Something that we did when my husbands mom passed away was to sit down with the girls and tell them that their grandmother is with God now and that He needed her more at this time. This was the only the we could come up with at the time especially since they were so close to her and their was many tears around the house.

I am not sure how you should tell Drew, he is such an old soul but I like Ambhi's idea.....

There are some good kids books and just be honest about it. My daughter was a big support when she was just 4 without knowing it (with hugs). And when she asked why I was crying I told her because I missed Mickey and PawPaw (that they are in Heaven and I won't see them again for a very long time) and she understood that. There is What is Heaven? by Maria Schriver, and Fall of Freddie the Leaf (the story of the life cycle for kids. It's very abstract at such a young age, but they understand sadness.

First let me say that I am so sorry for your loss. Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of my dad's passing. My son , Hunter was very close to my dad, as were all of us. Hunter was 4 and a half last year when it happened. We spoke to a psychologist that is a friend of the family about how to tell Hunter. We waited until a day after he passed, until we could both hold some sort of composure as we told him. He did say it was okay and actually good for Hunter to see us cry--that it would reassure him that it was okay to cry.It went something like this,
"Hunter, you know Grandpa?"
"Yeah."
"Well grandpa's heart got very sick and it stopped working, and he died."
(he didn't really know what died meant until I said the next part.)
"SO. this means that Grandpa is in Heaven,but we won't get to see him anymore."

At that point he broke down sobbing. He said he was really going to miss Grandpa, and that he was the best Grandpa. I held him and we cried together. He asked if he could watch some home videos that had him and my dad in them, and we did. I will tell you in the months that followed, he talked about it a lot and about my dad alot. One thing, he would bring up a lot is how sad he was that I don't have a dad anymore. He would also bring up that it was sad that Trey, my 12 year old little brother, didn't have a dad anymore. I think he needed reassurance that his own daddy wouldn't be going to heaven soon.

I know you don't know me, but I am here if you need someone to talk to. It is so hard to go through the loss of a parent, and it's hard for others to know what to say or to understand how you feel. It was hard for me to even talk to my husband about it . I mostly turned to my 19 y.o. sister, b/c I felt like she was the only one that knew what I was feeling, and she would turn to me as well when she needed to talk.

My heart breaks for you right now Kandi. There are so many words in the English language. It is one of the most complex languages out there. However, at times like this, the English language fails us. There are no words that can adequately describe the pain and sadness that come at when you lose someone you love--when you lose a part of yourself.

We did the same thing with our kids when steves grandfather died last year it really helped them.

I am overwhelmed with sadness for you...Im so sorry for your family's loss. My dad passed away unexpectedly last New Years Eve and it was the hardest thing I ever went through. My son was best buds with his pawpaw and I struggled with what to do with him at his funeral which was open casket. He wasnt old enough to have a real discussion with at the time. I couldnt handle taking him up there to see him like that. My dh ended up walking him up there to say goodbye to his PawPaw and he did ok with that. My son still loves to look at pictures of him and his PawPaw and watch his videos.
You have gotten some great suggestion here. The funeral home also has resources on how to talk to youth about death. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Kanid I am so very sorry for your loss. When my friends mom passed away which he called Grandma, we told him that she went to Heaven because God needed some help and that he can always talk to her and that she is watching over him. And he tells people the his Grandma Sharon is helping God in Heaven and watching over me, and I can talk to her without using the phone.

Check out your local library for children's books on death, there are some good ones. dont' know if you have time to do that though. if you are a God believing family and he is familiar with God then i'd go the route of just simply explaining that grandma has gone to heaven. Maybe, God had a special job there that He needs her to do and God just decided that it was her time to go visit Him. Don't go into a lot of details, a lot of times, we adults go way too far into details when all they need is a simple explanation. let him ask the questions instead of you going into a lengthy explanation.
do a google search on explaining death to small children, you may get some good help.

Kandi - I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. I lost my Mom 2 years ago and I think about her all the time. We told DS that our family members who have died are in Heaven with God. He thinks they get donuts & orange juice every day (he gets a donut and orange juice at church on Sunday).
